San Antonio CDL permit and skills-test guide

A San Antonio applicant planning to test in a tractor-trailer needs a different appointment from a driver testing in a single straight truck. DPS lists San Antonio Southeast for CDL skills testing and identifies the separate Leon Valley Mega Center as Class B only on its skills-site list. When you call, have your permit class, planned vehicle and DPS confirmation handy so the rental fits the test.

Choose the permit subjects for your vehicle

For a passenger job, check the seating capacity, brake system and type of bus. Tell us if you intend to carry schoolchildren, so you can discuss both passenger and school bus requirements with DPS.

Review Texas commercial vehicle operation and general knowledge. Add air brakes, combination vehicles, or passenger and school bus topics as your vehicle requires. Use the current Texas handbook alongside practice questions.

Prepare for inspection, backing and road

Work through the pre-trip in the order you can repeat aloud. On the backing exercises, account for the truck’s wheelbase and trailer swing. On the road, practice mirror checks and controlled turns in the type of vehicle you intend to test in.

For ordinary Texas plates in Bexar County, the downtown tax office is at Vista Verde Plaza on North Pecos La Trinidad. The state TxDMV center is at Rolling Oaks Mall, while the DPS skills-test site is on South New Braunfels. Check the office named on your paperwork before routing a trip across town.
